Sources and method

Every number on this site comes from a rate that a bank or an exchange office has published itself. Here is who they are, and what we do with their figures.

BoA

Bank of Albania

The central bank publishes the official reference rate on business days. Buy and sell are the same number: it is a benchmark for accounting and contracts, not a rate anyone can exchange money at. We show it as the reference line.

The largest network of exchange offices in the country, and usually a good indication of what the street market is paying.

One of Albania’s largest commercial banks. Its counter rates cover seven major currencies.

How the numbers are made

Every 15 minutes we read each source’s published rates, around the clock. Each page shows when it was last updated.

The average shown for a currency is the plain mean of the buy rates, and of the sell rates, of every source quoting that currency at that moment. Not every source quotes every currency. You can always switch from the average to a single source.

Rates are per one unit. Where a source quotes per hundred (the central bank does for the yen and the rouble) we convert it, so everything on the site is lek per 1 unit of foreign currency.

We leave out what is not believable. A quote that sits far from every other source, or that jumps implausibly between two readings, is treated as a publishing error and dropped. A quote with an extreme gap between buy and sell stays visible under its source but is kept out of the average.

The 24h change compares the current mid-rate with the one from a day earlier.

These are published rates, not offers: the rate you get at the counter can differ for large amounts or late in the day. Kursi.al is an information service and does not exchange money.
